Top Tip: Custard, Creme Fraiche and Cream

Image
Oatly Oatly do a whole host of awesome products that are Dairy, Egg and Soya free http://www.oatly.com/products/united-kingdom/ Tescos are good at stocking these. The Cream, Creme Fraiche and Custard are really very good.

Top Tip: Sliced Bread

Image
Sliced Bread It can be hard to find Dairy, Egg and especially SOYA free bread. Sainsburys do a harvest grain loaf that you can slice yourself or get sliced which is free of all of them. They also do a prepackaged sliced bread called Braces Farmhouse Seeded (Family Favourites). Its the only one I could find that was Dairy, Egg and Soya free http://www.bracesbakery.co.uk/products/farmhouse-range/farmhouse-seeded-800g/ Tescos also do a Multiseed Farmhouse loaf https://www.tesco.com/groceries/product/details/default.aspx?id=285060405 and Finest Super Grained Farmhouse loaf https://www.tesco.com/groceries/product/details/?id=291376461 As always - double check with the bakery or the back of the packet!!!

Cafe Review: Mokoko Coffee and Bakery

Image
Mokoko Coffee and Bakery http://www.mokokocoffee.com/ Mokoko is a relatively new cafe in the new development at Whapping Wharf in Bristol. Its got bench style seating, lovely coffee and a wide range of food and cakes, all of which is made on site. The nice thing about that is that you can directly ask the chefs what's in the food and they will know.  We've not tried the savoury food yet but the cakes are delicious. The only ones currently dairy egg and soya free are the Raw Cacao Chocolate cake and the Banana and Chocolate Cake. I know that's only two but the Banana and Chocolate cake is amazing and well worth a visit. There's also high chairs! Will update this once we've had a look at the savoury food. Always remember to double check with the restaurant, they are liable to change and add things in whenever they want!!

Top Tip: Oat Milk Organic vs Non Organic

Image
Oat Milk Organic vs Non Organic So we use Oatly Oat Drink (its called drink not milk for some reason) , it seems to work better for us as a substitute for milk! One of the other benefits to using Oatly is that its fortified with Vitamin D, Riboflavin, Vitamin B12 and Calcium which your LO might not be getting as much of if you're milk free but Oatly Organic doesn't have any of these. We instinctively bought the organic for a while and then realised. Presumably they can't call it organic if it has had stuff added to it! Oatly Non Organic: Nutrition information per 100 ml:  Energy 190 kJ/50 kcal Fat 1.5 g of which saturated 0.2 g Carbohydrates 6.6 g of which sugars 4.1 g * Fibre 0.8 g Protein 1.0 g Salt 0.11 g Vitamin D 1.5 µg (30%**) Riboflavin 0.21 mg (15%**) Vitamin B12 0.38 µg (15%**) Calcium 120 mg (15%**) Betaglucan 0.4 g * Natural sugars from oats. ** Of the Daily Reference Intake. Cafe Review: Ironworks Supply Co

Image
Ironworks Supply Co http://www.ironworkssupply.co.uk/ So this place was sold to us a good place for vegan food which normally means there's something that our LO can eat.  It wasn't bad. They've got a vegan open toast - Avocado, spinach, mushrooms, cherry toms and sourdough which was delicious. My LO had bacon, avocado on sourdough and loved it! The atmosphere was lovely, they've got a friendly little dog who lives there and thinks its bigger than it actually is. There's no child menu which is a shame however they do have high chairs (which I was pleasantly surprised about because its a bit hipster!) Staff Friendliness: 9/10 Child Friendliness: 6/10 - high chairs but no toys, no child menu Menu: 4/10 - other than the options above there's not really much else Always remember to double check with the restaurant, they are liable to change and add things in whenever they want!!

Recipe: Chocolate Cake

Chocolate Cake! So this one is from this website: https://veggiedesserts.co.uk/best-vegan-chocolate-cake/ I dont wanna get into copyright issues because there's lots of advertising on the website so I wont copy the recipe here BUT It makes a BRILLIANT chocolate. We didn't get a chance to take a picture because we ate it so fast! Unlike most vegan chocolate cakes which are stodgy, this one is light and fluffy yet still rich and tasty. Top tip - line your pans with oil/butter AND baking paper, otherwise it sticks. Have fun Always remember to check the labels of all the ingredients listed, they are liable to change and add things in whenever they want!!

Recipe: Chocolate Ready Brek

Chocolate Ready Brek! One of the issues with having milk, egg and soya intolerances is making sure we keep up with the vitamins and minerals that they should have including things such as calcium. Ready brek is fortified with all sorts of minerals and is really good at helping to substitute for some of these vitamins and minerals. Ready Brek is tasty but chocolate Ready Brek is even tastier so if your little one doesn't want to eat the standard Ready Brek then another way is with the chocolate version HOWEVER it contains Milk and Soya so instead you can use..... 20g of Original Ready Brek or Tesco Super Smooth Porridge - literally the same thing 120ml of Oat Milk 1 teaspoon of Cacao Powder 1-2 teaspoons of golden syrup Mix this all together and put it in the microwave for 40 secs, stir, then another 40 secs. Make sure you leave it to cool or blow on it to cool it. And there you have it, dairy and soya free chocolate ready brek! Enjoy! Always remember to chec...

Recipe: Courgette Chocolate Brownies

Image
Courgette Brownies These are great and taste delicious. Another good one to bake with your kid because there aren't many complicated steps to it. I use Food Thoughts Natural Cacao Powder , it's supposed to be slightly better for you than cocoa powder plus most of the other cocoa powders either have or may contain milk. 250g (shredded) raw courgette (don't wring out the courgette)  200g granulated sugar 120ml vegetable oil 225g plain flour 25g unsweetened cocoa powder (I use Food Thoughts Natural Cacao Powder) 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 teaspoon salt 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder 120g chopped pecans 50g chopped chocolate  (I use MooFree milk chocolate )  1.       Preheat oven to 175C/350F. Grease an 20x20 backing tray with oil. 2.       Grate the unpeeled raw courgette and set aside. 3.       In a large bowl mix all ingredients except the ...

Cafe review: Grounded

Grounded - Brislington This is one of a chain of cafes in Bristol. They've started a new menu that has lots of vegan options on it. Chief among them is the new vegan breakfast - toast, beans, field mushrooms, onions, roasted vine tomatoes rosemary potatoes and wilted kale. It's very tasty. They're also great at accommodating the food needs of my little one. He has the sausages, beans and toast as a breakfast and loves it! Staff friendliness - 10/10 Child friendly - 9/10 - high chairs, toys, books and no obligation to clear them up. Menu - 7/10 New Menu at Grounded Always remember to double check with the restaurant, they are liable to change and add things in whenever they want!!

Recipe: Shortbread

Image
Shortbread This recipe comes from my friend Vix whose granny was scottish. Obviously its been changed to have Vitalite instead of butter! It's a great one to make with your kid because its basically adding all the ingredients together and mashing it with your hands! Ingredients: 250mg Vitalite 125mg Sugar 250mg Plain Flour 125mg Cornflour You can adjust these amounts keeping the ratios the same as you want to make more or less. 1. Rub the butter and flour together to make it like breadcrumbs 2. Add the sugar and cornflour and rub/mash together to make a dough 3. Press the dough into a baking tray to about an inch thick, it doesn't need to be buttered, there's enough in the mixture! 4. Bake for about 30-40 mins. It should be golden on top. 5. Sprinkle with caster sugar as it comes out. 6. Leave to cool completely then cut out of tin. Always remember to check the labels of all the ingredients listed, they are liable to change and add things in whenever...
